WHERE TO FIND YOUR FIRST JOB
The best place to look for your first job are companies that can not afford to pay agency fees. These companies are more willing to train entry level programmers. Schools, government agencies and non-profit organizations typically don't pay agency fees and will therefore hire recent college grads. Large companies frequently have a college recruitment program, some entry level positions and apprentice programs are available as well.
Try to go into a Human Resource office to fill out an application rather than faxing or mailing your resume. This will give them a first hand look at you, creating a good impression and help you to stand out from the massive amounts of resumes they receive. Be sure to dress (conservative business suit) and be prepared for an interview.
Keep in mind that technical recruiters that work for agencies get paid to identify someone that already has the work experience and technical talent their client seeks. Therefore, technical recruiting agencies rarely place individuals right out of college. Agencies fees are paid for by the employer an the amount is usually based on the applicants starting salary. This fee is not deducted from the salary and there is no fee to the applicant.
